Midwest Clown Association Roundup

The following email came from Angela Gonzalez about the Midwest Clown Association Roundup

Psst – want a little preview of the fun??…….

The Midwest Clown Association Roundup is coming soon! Be there October 1-5 in Davenport, Iowa, as we celebrate going “Back to School.”

There will be a coloring contest and everyone is invited to color. You will have crayons in your goody bag and you can color your own clown coloring sheet or pick anyone else in the coloring book you will receive. The colored pictures will be signed in and given a number, then posted around the hotel where the hotel employees will be invited to pick their favorite picture. There are prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd and you will be famous!

Also to go along with the “Back to School” theme will be a great theme party. We will have a DJ for a sock hop but also serve a “standard” school lunch ( not PB and J), have a recess time of games with your favorite Phys. Ed. Teacher, and some exercises in reading, ‘ritin’, and ‘rithmetic. Put on your thinking caps to play “Are you Smarter than a Jr. Joey?”

The above is just a little taste of the fun being planned for the Roundup. Remember that we have two featured lecturers and performers, Julie Varholdt and Norm Barnhart (see attached flyer). There will be lots of classes in every clown skill and area that you want to learn more about. We are inducting a new member into the Midwest Hall of Fame – Lynette “Nettie Belle” McDonald, and we will be celebrating two members with a Lifetime Achievement Award – Nancy “Bubbles” Opatich and Bill “Bibo” Young.

Register today!!! You don’t want to miss out on all the fun!

P.S. If you have things to include in the goodie bag, please contact Lucy Mahoney ASAP at 708-361-8216.

IT’S ALMOST TIME!! STILL LOTS OF ROOM ON THE BUS!!!!

The Midwest Roundup is just around the corner now! Sure, we have the whole month of September but some things such as the Program Book, special registration prices, and your decision to have beef or chicken at the Saturday banquet are just a few things that invite your decisions even before the Roundup begins.

This year we are featuring 10 amazing classes by our two featured entertainers, Julie Varholdt and Norm Barnhart. They will be together in performance on Thursday evening and you will want to be there for that show. Norm is also doing a special Early Bird Class of intensive education in many areas of performing arts. Check out the flyer attached for more information on that special event.

Again our Midwest Roundup has competitions of the best of the best. Prepare now for Makeup, Wardrobe, Skits, Parade, Balloons, and Face Painting competitions. We are also offering a Judges Certification Workshop prior to the beginning of the Roundup. See the attached schedule for information on that. Competition rules will be covered and this workshop will make you a better judge and competitor. We have one person being inducted into the Midwest Hall of Fame and two people getting their awards for Lifetime Achievement. Be sure to be there to help honor them.

We want to remind you that NOW is the time to get your alley and personal greetings in for the Roundup 41st Anniversary Program Book. A full page is $100, half page is $75, quarter page is $50 and business card size is $25. Make sure your ad is “camera ready” and send it as a pdf attachment to angela.gonzalez[-at-]indy.gov or jb[-at-]jellybean-clown.com – OR Mail to Angela Gonzalez, 116 S.Audubon Road, #4, Indianapolis, IN 46219. Make checks payable to Midwest Clown Association and send to the Registrar, Hazel Ovanin, 5344 Seminole Court, Commerce Township, MI 48382. All ads must be postmarked by September 1, 2014.

Our theme is “Back to School” so be sure to bring some fun school memories and costuming for the Theme Party on Wednesday evening.

There will be a MCA Silent Auction on display from the end of the General Meeting (approximately 5 p.m. Saturday) until the Annual Banquet at 7 p.m. It’s always fun to see the gift baskets from each alley that are donated to the auction for MCA. Pack something memorable from your area or your alley and bring it along for that event.

Contact any of the MCA officers listed below for more information on anything for this Roundup. We’re working hard to make this a great Roundup and we’re looking forward to seeing you there.

Also, don’t forget this is an election year for MCA, and our Assistant Chief Joey Lucy Mahoney will be taking over as Chief Joey at the end of this year’s Round-Up! As is the custom, the Assistant Chief Joey acts as the nomination committee chair for elections. She has at least one individual willing to run for the positions of Assistant Chief Joey, Secretary, Treasurer and Sargeant at Arms. ALL POSITIONS are up for election except for CHIEF JOEY, so please, if you’ve ever thought of serving, NOW’s the time to step up and throw your name in that hat! (Remember that if you run for Assistant Chief Joey, you are committing to 6 years of service: two as assistant chief, two as chief joey, and two as past chief joey. All other positions are two-year terms.) Contact Lucy if you’d like to serve and she’ll see your name gets added to the ballot! Of course, the floor will always be open for last-minute nominations at the annual Fall Board meeting. However, if you get your name into Lucy now, your name can be added to the official ballot and you’ll have the opportunity to publish a short bio and pic in the next 3-Ring News (send to me at angela.gonzalez[-at-]indy.gov) before the end of August, so that members can get to know you better and will know who they are voting on!! Contact Lucy at lucyiyq2[-at-]comcast.net or by calling her at 708-361-8216 if you’re interested!

The Round-Up will be here before you know it!!! Can’t wait to see everyone and hope you all can join us!!

Camp CO-AI 2014

The following email came from Cheri Oats about the upcoming COAI Convention…

The Clown Education Promotions, llc. is
Proud and Honored To Host
The 2014 Clowns of America International Convention
Camp Co-Ai 2014

April 29 – May 4 at the Wyndham Hotel in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.
This convention is open to everyone: clowns, teachers, magicians, jugglers, twisters, or
face painters – there is something for everyone.
We invite you to come to Camp CO-AI.

Do you need a break from snow and cold? The only snow down here is Snow White. Put away your boots, hats, and snow shovels and come to Florida for educational experiences, games, and laughter.

There will be wonderful educational opportunities to hear from various board members and fourteen lecturers from all over the country as well as COAI competitions and contests galore. Here are some of the contests that we’re looking forward to:

  • MERIT BADGES will be given for all the events and for attendance at lectures. Those with the most badges will win prizes at the end of the convention.
  • FLASHLIGHT DECORATING will be a People’s Choice Award. Who goes to camp without a flashlight? Remember those nights when all the lights went out? Be prepared and don’t leave home without it.
  • SPOOKY STORYTELLING AROUND THE CAMP FIRE night will award a $50 prize for the best spooky story presentation. Think about it! Practice your best storytelling techniques and let your peers decide. $50 can go a long way at the Camp Store or Disney.
  • BUILD A SOCK PUPPET CLASS in the evening. All materials will be provided. All puppets will be displayed and a prize will be given to the best sock puppet; in addition, an instructor will try to arrange a fun skit with all the puppet people. After the puppet show you can buy the other sock and wear it home – just kidding.
  • FREE FORM FACE PAINTING is another People’s Choice Award. Paint anything you like. The only limit is the competition time: that will have thirty minutes. There will be glitter, feathers, jewels, and fun! Get your roommate or friend to be your model. This will take place before the General Membership meeting on Wednesday.
  • BALLOON CONTEST is also a People’s Choice Award. Have fun and be creative. Go for the gold; don’t settle for bronze or silver. Have fun.
  • GROUP CONTEST: There will be a monetary award for the cabin that wins the scavenger hunt. Come see how the cabins are selected, meet all kinds of new people, and find out what the winners receive. How good are you at finding clues?

There will be jams every night, hosted by many of your friends and members of your clown family.

If this isn’t enough, wait until you see the prizes in the Camp Store – you will have to come to find out what kind of prizes will be handed out. Sound interesting?

Don’t forget to enter all the traditional competitions as well: make up, single skits, group skits, face painting, balloons, and, of course, the Convention Best in Clown Award.

We can’t wait to see you and start the fun. You can RSVP by registering today online at coai.org or www.coaiconvention2014.com.

Can you remember camp when you were younger? We are going to bring back some of those great feelings, but this time we will be in a beautiful hotel (no tents here), have Disneyworld at our back door (it may be a little Goofy), great food (s’mores of course), and wonderful camaraderie. Are you ready for camp?

Haven’t signed up yet? There is still plenty of time.
Don’t forget to reserve you room. Room rates may go up if the block is filled.
Can you see yourself in the next New Calliope accepting winning awards?
How many do you think you can get?

SEE YOU AT CAMP CO-AI
