IT’S ALMOST TIME!! STILL LOTS OF ROOM ON THE BUS!!!!
The Midwest Roundup is just around the corner now! Sure, we have the whole month of September but some things such as the Program Book, special registration prices, and your decision to have beef or chicken at the Saturday banquet are just a few things that invite your decisions even before the Roundup begins.
This year we are featuring 10 amazing classes by our two featured entertainers, Julie Varholdt and Norm Barnhart. They will be together in performance on Thursday evening and you will want to be there for that show. Norm is also doing a special Early Bird Class of intensive education in many areas of performing arts. Check out the flyer attached for more information on that special event.
Again our Midwest Roundup has competitions of the best of the best. Prepare now for Makeup, Wardrobe, Skits, Parade, Balloons, and Face Painting competitions. We are also offering a Judges Certification Workshop prior to the beginning of the Roundup. See the attached schedule for information on that. Competition rules will be covered and this workshop will make you a better judge and competitor. We have one person being inducted into the Midwest Hall of Fame and two people getting their awards for Lifetime Achievement. Be sure to be there to help honor them.
We want to remind you that NOW is the time to get your alley and personal greetings in for the Roundup 41st Anniversary Program Book. A full page is $100, half page is $75, quarter page is $50 and business card size is $25. Make sure your ad is “camera ready” and send it as a pdf attachment to angela.gonzalez[-at-]indy.gov or jb[-at-]jellybean-clown.com – OR Mail to Angela Gonzalez, 116 S.Audubon Road, #4, Indianapolis, IN 46219. Make checks payable to Midwest Clown Association and send to the Registrar, Hazel Ovanin, 5344 Seminole Court, Commerce Township, MI 48382. All ads must be postmarked by September 1, 2014.
Our theme is “Back to School” so be sure to bring some fun school memories and costuming for the Theme Party on Wednesday evening.
There will be a MCA Silent Auction on display from the end of the General Meeting (approximately 5 p.m. Saturday) until the Annual Banquet at 7 p.m. It’s always fun to see the gift baskets from each alley that are donated to the auction for MCA. Pack something memorable from your area or your alley and bring it along for that event.
Contact any of the MCA officers listed below for more information on anything for this Roundup. We’re working hard to make this a great Roundup and we’re looking forward to seeing you there.

Also, don’t forget this is an election year for MCA, and our Assistant Chief Joey Lucy Mahoney will be taking over as Chief Joey at the end of this year’s Round-Up! As is the custom, the Assistant Chief Joey acts as the nomination committee chair for elections. She has at least one individual willing to run for the positions of Assistant Chief Joey, Secretary, Treasurer and Sargeant at Arms. ALL POSITIONS are up for election except for CHIEF JOEY, so please, if you’ve ever thought of serving, NOW’s the time to step up and throw your name in that hat! (Remember that if you run for Assistant Chief Joey, you are committing to 6 years of service: two as assistant chief, two as chief joey, and two as past chief joey. All other positions are two-year terms.) Contact Lucy if you’d like to serve and she’ll see your name gets added to the ballot! Of course, the floor will always be open for last-minute nominations at the annual Fall Board meeting. However, if you get your name into Lucy now, your name can be added to the official ballot and you’ll have the opportunity to publish a short bio and pic in the next 3-Ring News (send to me at angela.gonzalez[-at-]indy.gov) before the end of August, so that members can get to know you better and will know who they are voting on!! Contact Lucy at lucyiyq2[-at-]comcast.net or by calling her at 708-361-8216 if you’re interested!
The Round-Up will be here before you know it!!! Can’t wait to see everyone and hope you all can join us!!
The Sacramento Clown Show
Commercial for BagTheBan staring a pair of clowns…
Circus Life – By Rick Struve
I had the pleasure of meeting artist Rick Struve on Facebook. Rick used to clown as Soda Pop the Clown and once ran Soda Pop’s Funhouse which was one of the first online clown websites. Earlier this year, he introduces himself by saying,
Hello fellow clowns – it has been about a decade since I put on my make-up, but I still love the clowning lifestyle. Some of you may know me as ‘Soda Pop the Clown’ out of Cedar Rapids, IA – for years I had a weekly online newsletter for clowns (before Facebook was around, and the internet had not blown up quite yet). Anyway… I have recently started creating a cartoon for a local weekly newspaper – the title of my cartoon is, “Circus Life”. It will be appearing in about 2 weeks, but I thought the clowning community would enjoy a little bit of fun too.
Oh – and yes, the main character is a clown, and though he’s smiling… he usually has a sarcastic look upon his face. Please be aware, that I would never make him look bad though… I have much respect for the clowning community! I just figured sarcastic lines come out better when coming out of a sarcastic face…
Rick has given me permission to publish his cartoons on Just For Clowns. Please don’t reprint without Rick’s permission. To contact Rick, email: richstruve -at- yahoo.com
